Fashion Industry Makes a Move to Capital Hill
New York’s Garment District has been the heart of the United States’ fashion industry since the mid 1800s. Unfortunately, due to economic pressures and zoning changes it is on the decline. Anna Sui and Nanette Lepore have spearheaded efforts to revive the district with their ‘Save the Garment Center‘ campaign.
A recent development that may help their efforts is the approval of a congressional caucus devoted to the fashion industry – the Congressional Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Business Caucus. Unsurprisingly, the Representatives who will chair the caucus are from New York and California. This caucus will lend both visibility and voice to the fashion industry and hopefully ensure that the concerns that plague the industry and contribute to its declining physical presence in the U.S. will be addressed.
